York Region Recognizes the National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia
York Region joins residents across the country in recognizing National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia.
On January 29, 2017, six people lost their lives and 19 others were seriously injured during a terrorist attack at the Centre Culturel Islamique de Québec in Sainte-Foy.
Today, on the eighth anniversary of this tragedy, we pay tribute to the victims of this hateful act of terror and stand in solidarity with the survivors and all those who lost a loved one at the hands of bigotry, Islamophobia and racism.
In the wake of conflicts and events taking place around the world, we have seen a rise in hate-motivated crime and activities across the country. Hate and intolerance has no place in our communities, and we all have a responsibility to recognize, call out and oppose racism, faith-based discrimination and other forms of hatred.
As one of the fastest growing and most diverse municipality in Canada, York Region remains committed to building welcoming and inclusive communities that recognize and celebrate all dimensions of diversity. Our diversity is a source of economic vitality. It contributes to the rich cultural fabric of our communities and serves as a reminder we all have an obligation to combat discrimination and build a more inclusive York Region.
On behalf of more than 1.2 million people who call our communities home, York Region extends condolences to all who have been impacted by this senseless act of terror and reaffirm our commitment to standing up to all forms of hate and discrimination.
