York Region stands with survivors of domestic and gender-based violence
As we begin the 2025 White Ribbon Campaign and the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York stand with communities across Canada and around the world in calling for an end to violence that disproportionately impacts women, girls and gender-diverse individuals.
Everyone deserves to feel safe in their home, workplace and community. Yet, too many continue to experience harm where they should be most protected. Today, and every day, we honour the strength and resilience of survivors and hold space for those who may not yet feel ready or able to seek help.
York Region remains committed to working with our local and Indigenous partners, community organizations, law enforcement and frontline service providers to expand access to supports and promote relationships built on safety, dignity and respect.
On November 25, 2025, York Region will join communities across Canada in marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The clock tower at the York Region Administrative Centre in the Town of Newmarket will be illuminated in purple as a visible symbol of hope, support and solidarity. We are also proud to support the White Ribbon Campaign and we encourage everyone, especially men and boys, to speak out and take action to end gender-based violence.
As we reflect on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women on December 6, 2025, we remember the 14 young women murdered at Montréal’s École Polytechnique in 1989. Their lives were taken simply because they were women. This solemn anniversary reminds us that we must remain vigilant in our efforts to create communities free from violence and fear.
Regional Council remains steadfast in our belief that every person deserves to be safe, respected and valued. Together, we will continue to build a future where equality, compassion and safety are not aspirations, but realities for all who call York Region home.
