York Region celebrates National Public Works Week 2026
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, I am proud to recognize May 17 to 23, 2026, as National Public Works Week and celebrate the dedicated professionals who help keep our communities safe, healthy and connected every day.
This year’s theme, Rooted in Service, Powered by Community, reflects the vital role public works professionals play in supporting the daily lives of residents across York Region. Whether maintaining roads and bridges, delivering clean and safe drinking water, supporting reliable transit, managing waste and recycling systems, protecting our forests and natural environments or responding during emergencies, these essential workers are the foundation of strong and thriving communities.
Much of this work happens behind the scenes, but its impact is felt in every neighbourhood, every business and every community across York Region. Public Works professionals bring expertise, innovation and dedication to the critical infrastructure and services residents rely on each day. Their commitment helps ensure York Region remains a welcoming, sustainable and resilient place to live, work and raise a family.
National Public Works Week is also an opportunity to recognize the teamwork and collaboration required to deliver these essential services. From transportation and water systems to environmental stewardship and emergency preparedness, public works staff continue to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to service excellence and community well-being.
As part of this year’s celebrations, York Region will host its annual Family Fun Day on Saturday, May 23, 2026, in the Town of East Gwillimbury, offering residents and families an opportunity to meet the people behind these essential services and learn more about the important work they do every day.
During National Public Works Week, we extend our sincere appreciation to York Region Public Works staff and all public works professionals for their dedication, professionalism and service to our communities. Your work makes a meaningful difference in the lives of residents today and for generations to come.
