National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia
York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York join residents across the country in recognizing National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia.
On January 29, 2017, six people tragically lost their lives and 19 others were seriously injured during a terrorist attack at the Centre culturel islamique de Québec in Sainte-Foy.
Today, on the eighth anniversary of this tragedy, we pay tribute to the victims of this hateful act of terror. We also stand in solidarity with the survivors and all those who have lost loved ones to bigotry, Islamophobia and racism.
Considering ongoing global conflicts and their impacts here at home, we have seen a troubling rise in hate-based crimes and activities across Canada. Hate and intolerance have no place in our communities, and it is our collective responsibility to recognize, confront and reject all forms of racism, discrimination and hatred.
As one of Canada’s most diverse and rapidly growing municipalities, York Region remains steadfast in our commitment to fostering welcoming, inclusive communities that celebrate all dimensions of diversity. This diversity is a source of strength and a cornerstone of our economic vitality and cultural richness. It reminds us of the importance of combating discrimination and creating a more inclusive society.
On behalf of Regional Council and the more than 1.25 million people who call our communities home, I extend our deepest condolences to those affected by this senseless act of terror and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to standing against all forms of hate and discrimination.
