York Region celebrates Chief Jim MacSween’s remarkable career and leadership
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, I am proud to recognize and celebrate the outstanding career of York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween, who will retire on June 26, 2026.
Chief MacSween has devoted 37 years to policing, a career defined not just by longevity but by unwavering dedication, integrity and a deep commitment to the safety and well-being of our communities. For the past six years as Chief of York Regional Police, he has led with vision, compassion and courage, guiding the service through some of the most extraordinary challenges in its history. From the complexities and uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic to the evolving needs of a rapidly growing Region, Chief MacSween has navigated every challenge with calm, clarity and a steadfast commitment to public service.
What sets Chief MacSween apart is not only his professional accomplishments but the way he has led people. He has been a mentor and a friend to countless officers and civilian staff. He has taken the time to listen, understand and support those around him, ensuring York Regional Police is a high-performing organization where people feel valued, respected and empowered. Under his leadership, the service has strengthened community trust, fostered a people-first culture and built enduring relationships with residents, community organizations and municipal partners across York Region.
Chief MacSween’s impact reaches far beyond organizational achievements. His integrity, empathy and unwavering commitment to the principles of public service have inspired those who work alongside him and set a standard for leadership that will be felt for years to come. Upon his retirement, he will leave a legacy of professionalism, innovation and care that will continue to guide York Regional Police long after his retirement.
