York Region celebrates International Day of Forests
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, I am pleased to recognize Saturday, March 21, 2026, as International Day of Forests.
This United Nations observance highlights the vital role forests play in sustaining our planet and communities. This year’s theme, Forests and Economies, reminds us that forests are not only environmental assets, but also powerful drivers of economic resilience and community well-being.
Across York Region, we are proud stewards of the York Regional Forest, one of the largest municipally owned forest networks in Canada. Spanning thousands of hectares across our cities and towns, the forest delivers lasting value in many important ways.
Environmentally, the York Regional Forest helps clean our air, store carbon, protect biodiversity and support watersheds, which advances long-term sustainability across our communities.
Socially, the forest offers residents and visitors welcoming spaces to connect with nature, supporting physical and mental well-being, while fostering a deeper appreciation of the natural environment.
Economically, it contributes to a resilient green economy, supporting sustainable forestry, tourism and local jobs, while helping reduce the long-term costs associated with climate change.
As we mark International Day of Forests, Regional Council reaffirms our commitment to enhancing and protecting the York Regional Forest for future generations. By investing in sustainable forest management today, we are strengthening our environment, supporting our communities and building a more resilient economy for tomorrow.
