York Region cheers on local athletes competing at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, it is my pleasure to extend congratulations and appreciation to the exceptional York Region athletes representing Canada at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games.
The Olympic Games are a powerful reminder of global unity, bringing together athletes from around the world who speak different languages and represent diverse cultures, yet are united through competition, cooperation, national pride and a shared love of sport. The Winter Games celebrate resilience, teamwork and determination, qualities that reflect the very best of our communities here in York Region.
We are proud to see York Region athletes competing on the world stage across multiple winter sports. In men’s hockey, Connor McDavid from the Town of Newmarket, Mitch Marner from the City of Vaughan, Sam Bennett from the Town of East Gwillimbury and Jordan Binnington from the City of Richmond Hill will represent Team Canada. On the women’s hockey team, Laura Stacey from the Township of King and Erin Ambrose from the Town of Georgina will proudly wear the maple leaf. York Region is also represented in figure skating by Paul Poirier from the City of Markham, in freestyle skiing by Town of Newmarket-born Meghan Oldham and in bobsleigh by Luka Stoikos from the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville and Mark Zanette from the City of Vaughan.
The honour of representing Canada at the Olympic Games is a testament to years of dedication, perseverance and sacrifice by these athletes, as well as the unwavering support of their coaches, families, friends and local communities. Their achievements inspire pride across York Region and motivate the next generation of athletes to dream big and aim high.
On behalf of the almost 1.3 million residents who call York Region home, congratulations to our local Olympians and to all Canadian athletes competing at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games. Team York Region will be watching, cheering and celebrating your achievements.
