York Region stands up to bullying on Pink Shirt Day
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, I am proud to recognize February 25, 2026, as Pink Shirt Day and acknowledge the role each of us plays in addressing bullying across our communities.
Pink Shirt Day began in 2007, when two Nova Scotia students organized an act of kindness after a fellow student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. Their simple yet powerful gesture sparked a movement that continues to inspire communities around the world. In 2012, the United Nations declared May 4 as Anti-Bullying Day and today the last Wednesday in February is recognized across Canada as National Anti-Bullying Day.
What began as a small act of solidarity has evolved into a global call to action against bullying and discrimination. Pink Shirt Day reminds us that our schools, workplaces and public spaces must be safe and welcoming for everyone. The responsibility to create those environments does not rest with one person or one organization, it belongs to all of us.
York Region is one of the most diverse communities in Canada. As our diversity becomes more visible and more openly embraced, we must continue to foster acceptance, inclusion and respect for people of all cultures, identities and lived experiences. When we lead with empathy, compassion and kindness, we help build a community where everyone feels valued and supported.
In honour of Pink Shirt Day, York Region will illuminate the Administrative Centre clock towers, located at 17250 Yonge Street in the Town of Newmarket, in pink as a visible symbol of our commitment to stand up against bullying in all its forms.
I encourage residents, community partners and organizations across York Region to wear pink and join us in promoting dignity, respect and belonging for all. Together, we can ensure our communities remain places where everyone can thrive, free from discrimination and united by kindness.
Our communities are strongest when we choose acceptance, extend respect and champion inclusion every day of the year.
