York Region Celebrates Indigenous History Month
June is National Indigenous History Month, a time to honour the unique heritage, culture and traditions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples across our communities. This month is an opportunity to deepen our understanding and celebrate the unique histories, customs, spirituality and languages of Indigenous Peoples and honour their stories and connection to the land.
York Region acknowledges we are located on the traditional lands of many indigenous Peoples, including the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, Huron-Wendat and Métis and the treaty lands of Haudenosaunee, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and Williams Treaties First Nations. We also recognize the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation as our closest First Nation Community.
This month serves as an important reminder of the strength and resilience of Indigenous Peoples who have lived on this land since time immemorial and whose presence continues to impact our communities, province and country. It is an opportunity to learn about the historical and contemporary contributions of Indigenous People to Canadian society.
Throughout June, we recognize that First Nations, Inuit and Métis People are original self-determining peoples with Treaty rights, constitutional rights and human rights that must be respected.
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, I stand in support with Indigenous communities. Together, we can foster a community that honours Indigenous Peoples and enriches the shared strength of our communities.
