Traffic Technology at Intersections
York Region uses a range of modern tools at intersections such as traffic signals, cameras, pedestrian push buttons and vehicle detectors, to improve safety and keep traffic moving smoothly. These technologies work together to provide real‑time information that helps manage roads efficiently across the Region.
Dual Mode Antenna The dual mode antenna sends traffic signal, traffic video and Bluetooth reader information back to the Roads and Traffic Operations Centre.
Traffic Control Signals Red, amber and green signals direct traffic.
Pedestrian Push Button Pedestrian push buttons are located at signalized intersections. When activated, the pedestrian display appears to ensure safe crossing at intersections for pedestrians.
Red Light Camera Installed to photograph motorists running red lights.
Street Lights Provides lighting during periods of low light.
Traffic Camera Remote video monitoring to respond to incidents. Video is not recorded, live feed only.
Pedestrian Signals Pedestrian right of way is detected and displayed visually and audibly. The countdown shows how much time is remaining to cross the street.
Controller Cabinet Cabinet that holds the traffic signal control equipment.
Underground Detection Loops Cables embedded in the roadway to detect the presence of vehicles.
Radar Image Detection Pole mounted vehicle detection using radar imaging.
Optical GPS and Radio Detects transit vehicles using optical GPS and radio, changes the signal to provide the right of way.
Optical Infrared Detects fire, ambulance and transit vehicles using optical infrared and changes the signal to provide right of way.
Note: Not all signalized intersections in York Region have all of the items listed.
