York Region honours International Holocaust Remembrance Day
Today, York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York join people around the world to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration and Extermination Camp.
We solemnly remember the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and the millions of others who were murdered because of their ethnicity, nationality, political beliefs, disabilities or sexual orientation. Each life lost represents the loss of parents, grandparents, children, siblings and friends – people who were killed simply for who they were and what they believed.
This day also honours the survivors and brave individuals who risked their lives to protect others. Their stories of resilience, courage and humanity remain a beacon of hope and a stark reminder of the atrocities of the Holocaust. They challenge us to never forget and to ensure the lessons of this dark chapter in history are not lost to time.
Regrettably, antisemitism, hate and intolerance continue to exist in the world today. Recent global events and conflicts have underscored the ongoing need to combat racism, prejudice and xenophobia. These issues affect communities worldwide, including here in York Region.
As a community, we must stand united in rejecting hate in all its forms. Through education, advocacy and meaningful action, we can address antisemitism and intolerance, while also ensuring history is preserved and accurately taught.
York Region is dedicated to fostering welcoming, inclusive and diverse communities where everyone feels valued and respected. As a government, Regional Council remains committed to protecting human rights and building strong, caring, safe communities for all who call York Region home.
