York Region Celebrates Black History
On behalf of York Regional Council, The Regional Municipality of York and our more than 1.25 million residents, I am honoured to recognize February as Black History Month. This month provides a meaningful opportunity to celebrate the resilience, innovation and leadership of Black Canadians who continue to shape and enrich our communities.
Black History Month also invites us to reflect on the diverse experiences, achievements and challenges faced by Black individuals throughout history. Their enduring impact is evident across all aspects of society, from the arts and sciences to business and public service.
In York Region, one of Canada’s most diverse communities, the Black population continues to grow and thrive. As of 2021, individuals identifying as Black made up more than 5% of our population. This demographic has enriched our community with a vibrant heritage and cultural diversity, while also advocating for equity, justice and systemic change.
York Region remains steadfast in our commitment to addressing systemic racism and fostering a society that celebrates inclusion and diversity. In 2018, Regional Council endorsed the Inclusion Charter for York Region, reinforcing our collective responsibility to build a community where everyone can reach their full potential.
Regional Council also recognized 2014-2024 as the International Decade for People of African Descent, a global initiative to promote the social, cultural, economic and political rights of people of African descent. Although the decade has concluded, its principles continue to guide our efforts to denounce anti-Black racism, dismantle systemic barriers and support meaningful change in partnership with our community.
While February is dedicated to honouring Black history, the responsibility to educate ourselves, to confront biases and build equitable systems is ongoing. I encourage all residents to take this month as an opportunity to learn about the vital role Black Canadians have played – and continue to play – in shaping our communities, our province and our country. Together, we can move closer to a society where equity and inclusion are not aspirations, but realities for all.
