Celebrating Indigenous History and Advancing Reconciliation
June is National Indigenous History Month – a time to recognize and celebrate the profound impact of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples in shaping our communities and our shared history. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the work ahead in advancing reconciliation, justice and equity for Indigenous Peoples.
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, I stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities. We recognize the strength, resilience and invaluable contributions of Indigenous Peoples who have lived on this land for thousands of years. We are proud of our commitment to honouring their histories and cultures and we reaffirm our dedication to supporting Indigenous communities today and into the future.
York Region acknowledges we reside on the traditional lands of many Indigenous Peoples, including the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, Huron-Wendat and Métis, and the treaty lands of the Haudenosaunee, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and Williams Treaties First Nations. We also recognize the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation as our closest First Nation community.
In alignment with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, York Region is committed to building strong, respectful relationships with Indigenous communities. This includes collaborating on Regional initiatives, promoting Indigenous cultural education and integrating Indigenous knowledge into our planning and policies.
As we mark Indigenous History Month, let us all commit to action. Let us learn from the wisdom of Indigenous peoples, support their leadership and ensure that the promise of reconciliation is not just a gesture, but a shared goal we work toward every day.
Together, we can build a future that honours the legacy of Indigenous Peoples and strengthens the fabric of our Region for all who call it home.
