York Region honours International Holocaust Remembrance Day
Today, York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York join people around the world in observing International Holocaust Remembrance Day and marking the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration and Extermination Camp.
We solemnly remember the more than six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust, along with millions of others persecuted and murdered because of their ethnicity, nationality, political beliefs, disabilities or sexual orientation. Each life lost represents families forever changed, including parents, grandparents, children, siblings and friends whose lives were taken simply for who they were and what they believed.
This day also honours Holocaust survivors and the brave individuals who risked their own lives to protect others. Their stories of resilience, courage and humanity continue to inspire us and serve as a powerful reminder of the consequences of hatred, indifference and dehumanization. They call on us to never forget and to ensure the lessons of this dark chapter in history are preserved for future generations.
Tragically, antisemitism, hate and intolerance persist in our world today. Ongoing global events continue to underscore the urgent need to confront racism, prejudice and xenophobia wherever they exist, including here in York Region.
As a community, we must stand united in rejecting hate in all its forms. Through education, remembrance, advocacy and meaningful action, we can challenge antisemitism and intolerance while ensuring the history of the Holocaust is not repeated.
York Region remains committed to fostering welcoming, inclusive and diverse communities where everyone feels safe, valued and respected. Regional Council will continue to uphold human rights and work toward building strong, caring, safe communities for all who call York Region home.
