York Regional Council refreshes vision to guide growth and strengthen communities
Newmarket – York Regional Council received a presentation and approved updates to its Vision, reaffirming York Region’s commitment to strong, caring, safe communities while reflecting the evolving needs of the Region’s 1.29 million residents.
The refreshed Vision document provides clarity on what these priorities mean for York Region today and into the future. Strong communities are resilient and future-ready, caring communities are collaborative and inclusive and safe communities are accessible and thriving.
“Our Vision is York Region’s north star. It is both a reflection of what residents value most and a guiding framework for Council decisions,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Eric Jolliffe. “These updates ensure we remain aligned with community priorities, anticipate the pressures of growth and continue building resilient, inclusive and safe communities for generations to come.”
York Region’s Vision continues to focus on four key areas: economic vitality, healthy communities, sustainable environment and good government. Within these areas of focus, updated definitions emphasize priorities like affordability, innovation, access to services, environmental stewardship, mobility and trust in government.
“Vision sets the direction, but it is through responsible financial planning that we make these priorities achievable,” said Township of King Mayor Steve Pellegrini, Chair of the Region’s Finance and Administration. “By aligning York Region’s strategic plan and multi-year budget with council’s Vision, we are ensuring the investments we make today support resilient community and long-term value for our residents.”
“This refreshed Vision gives our organization a clear path to turn Council’s direction into action,” said York Region Chief Administrative Officer Erin Mahoney. “It guides our programs, services and performance measures as we track progress and ensure every decision supports the communities we serve.”
Progress toward Vision will be measured through community indicators and organizational performance measures, aligned with global standards such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and social determinants of health. This dual approach ensures accountability both to residents and within the organization itself.
