York Region mourns the passing of Stephen Lewis
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, I extend our sincere condolences on the passing of Stephen Lewis, who died on March 31, 2026, at the age of 88.
Mr. Lewis dedicated his life to public service, both in Canada and internationally. From his time as leader of Ontario’s New Democratic Party to his role as Canada’s Ambassador to the United Nations, he was a strong and consistent voice for social justice, human rights and global equity.
He will be remembered not only for his leadership in politics, but for his unwavering advocacy on the world stage, particularly his work advancing the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa and supporting grassroots organizations through the Stephen Lewis Foundation.
Mr. Lewis brought conviction and purpose to every role he held, and his contributions have made a profound and lasting impact.
As we reflect on the remarkable life and legacy of Stephen Lewis, we also extend our thoughts and condolences to his family, friends and all those who were influenced by his work.
