York Region and partners kick off Road Safety Week with new school zone safety measures
Newmarket – Members of the media are invited to join The Regional Municipality of York and traffic safety partners York Regional Police (YRP), York Region Paramedic Services and the Canadian Automobile Association South Central Ontario (CAA SCO) at a road safety event to kick off Canada’s Road Safety Week in the City of Richmond Hill.
As part of York Region’s Vision Zero Traveller Safety Plan, the Region will highlight a new speed feedback board to help reduce speeding in this school zone. Forty speed feedback boards will be installed in school zones in York Region by the end of 2026 to help reduce speeding and protect our most vulnerable road users.

York Region and our traffic safety partners have a collective commitment to safety, health and well-being of all within our communities.
Key facts:
- More than 90% of all collisions involving pedestrians and more than 85% of all collisions involving cyclists result in injuries or fatalities
- Aggressive driving (including speeding) collisions represent about 50% of severe collisions on Regional roads
- York Region continues to implement road safety measures as part of the Vision Zero Traveller Safety Plan to protect our most vulnerable road users, including:
- Installing “SLOW DOWN” pavement markings in community safety zones
- Implementing no right turn on red restrictions and protected left-turns at priority intersections
- Implementing the Red Light Camera program
- Installing speed feedback boards in school zones
- Revising speed limits for growing communities and safe travel
