York Region advances Vision Zero Traveller Safety Plan with data driven results and innovative tools

Newmarket – York Regional Council received an update on York Region’s Vision Zero Traveller Safety Plan Annual Report, with a goal to prevent serious injuries and fatalities, and sets a target to reduce severe collisions by 10% over five years. The update also includes a Safety Performance Report highlighting the plan's progress and collision trends from its second year.

“The latest collision data tells a clear story that York Region’s safety strategy is working,” said Eric Jolliffe, York Region Chairman and CEO. “Prior to the plan, severe collisions were trending upward year-over-year. However, since implementation, they have stabilized and begun to decline, even as traffic volumes continue to grow, demonstrating targeted investments are delivering measurable, life saving benefits for our communities.”

The 2025 Vision Zero Traveller Safety Plan Annual Report includes:

• Preventing an estimated 287 injuries and reducing severe collisions compared to projected trends
• Applying to the Provincial Road Safety Initiatives Fund to support implementation of new school zone safety measures
• Completing 20 safety improvements in 2025, with 25 additional projects planned for 2026, beyond school zones
• Launching a digital Vision Zero Traveller Safety Map publicly displaying severe collision locations and targeted safety measures, allowing users to access data by collision type, location, road user, age and timeframe to support transparency and evidence based decisions
• Developing a modern, technology enabled transportation program to strengthen future safety and network performance, including digital road signs, adaptive signal coordination, expanded message signs and video analytics to identify near miss incidents

“York Region is enhancing transparency through an innovative Vision Zero Traveller Safety Map, providing residents and partners clear, accessible insight into collision data and safety initiatives,” said Tom Mrakas, Mayor of the Town of Aurora and Chair of Public Works – Transportation Services. “By leveraging modern, technology enabled tools and enhanced measures in safety zones, the Region is taking a smarter, more proactive approach to protecting our most vulnerable residents and supporting safe movement of people and goods in our communities.”

York Region also updated its Community Safety Zone policy to improve road safety, implementing new measures to protect vulnerable road users, particularly children. The updated policy includes 23 new Community Safety Zones on Regional roads across all local municipalities. These zones will feature enhanced safety measures, including oversized speed limit signs, flashing beacons, additional speed display boards, new pedestrian and traffic signals, accessibility upgrades and targeted enforcement by York Regional Police, helping create safer streets and school areas for everyone.
