York Region statement on Iran-related hostilities in Middle East
On behalf of York Regional Council, today, and every day, our thoughts are with the people of Iran and the escalating hostilities and continued instability across the Middle East.
Many residents here in York Region have family, friends and loved ones directly affected by these events. In times of uncertainty and unrest, the human impact is felt most profoundly by families and communities.
Today, members of our community are gathering in the City of Richmond Hill for a rally in solidarity with anti-government protesters in Iran. We respect the rights of individuals to peacefully assemble and to raise their voices in support of safety, human rights and democratic freedoms.
York Region is one of the most diverse communities in Canada and that diversity is our greatest strength. It connects us to the world, deepens our understanding of one another and reminds us that global events are never far from home. When one part of our community is hurting, we all feel it.
We stand with the people of Iran seeking safety and opportunity. We also stand with our residents here at home who are carrying the weight of worry for loved ones abroad.
At moments like this, our strength lies in compassion, unity and our shared commitment to peace and human rights for all.
