International Overdose Awareness Day is August 31
Join York Region for a community vigil where we stand together as one family to remember, to grieve and to take action to address the ongoing impact of overdose.
Every year on August 31, people around the world observe International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) also referred to as World Poisoning Awareness Day.
At this annual event, we:
- Remember people who have died from drug poisoning and overdose
- Acknowledge the grief of family and friends left behind
- Raise awareness about the impact and tragedy of drug poisoning and overdose
- Stimulate action and discussion about poisoning/overdose prevention, stigma reduction and drug policy
This year's theme for IOAD is “25 Years On. Still Needed.” which recognizes the ongoing and preventable substance-related harms experienced by people who use drugs and highlights the need for continued community intervention.
York Region community members are invited to attend an in-person vigil as well as a community event and art installation focused on remembrance, awareness, and community connection.
