York Region introduces new Signs on Regional Roads Bylaw

York Region has implemented a new Signs on Regional Roads Bylaw to improve safety, reduce sign clutter and support efficient road operations.
Following extensive consultation with local cities and towns, industry partners and the public, and in response to Regional Council’s direction for a more progressive approach to managing signs on Regional roads, the new bylaw took effect Thursday, January 1, 2026.
Key highlights of the new sign bylaw
- Improves safety by preventing signs from blocking sightlines, interfering with transit stops and utilities and deterring unapproved signs
- Defines sign types and size requirements for business, real estate, development and election signs
- Adjusts permit fees to help offset program costs, including removal blitzes and regular patrols
- Designates approximately 700 intersections for sign placement across York Region, with maps and printable guides on york.ca/RoadPermits
- Requires mandatory identifier stickers on permitted signs to ensure visibility and compliance
- Allows York Region to remove non‑compliant signs, which can be retrieved for a $64 fee per sign
Signs that block sightlines or interfere with transit stops can create hazards and impacts road safety. The new bylaw helps keep roads safe and reduces sign pollution across York Region.
