Flags lowered at York Region facilities in recognition of National Day of Mourning
Today, we lower flags at York Region facilities in solemn recognition of National Day of Mourning – a day to remember the lives lost, the families forever changed and the many workers injured or made ill simply doing their jobs.
Behind every statistic is a name, a face and a story. A parent who didn’t come home. A friend who was taken too soon. A co-worker whose life changed in an instant. As we take a moment of silence at 11 a.m., I encourage everyone to reflect not just on those we have lost, but also on our shared responsibility to protect one another.
Workplace tragedies are preventable, and that is what makes this day so powerful. It reminds us that safe and healthy workplaces don’t happen by chance. They happen when safety is a value we live, lead and uphold together.
To those who have been impacted by a workplace incident – whether you are grieving, recovering or still finding you way forward – please know that we stand with you. We remember you and we remain committed to building a culture of care and safety across York Region.
Let this day be a reminder to keep each other safe, not just today, but every day.
