York Region recognized for more than two decades of budget excellence
Newmarket – The Regional Municipality of York received the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the Region’s 2025 budget, marking 21 consecutive years the Region has been recognized with this award.
“On behalf of York Regional Council and the almost 1.3 million residents who call York Region home, it is an honour to receive this award for the past two decades,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Eric Jolliffe. “This achievement demonstrates the Region’s ongoing excellence in budgeting and its commitment to fiscal accountability and strategic financial planning.”
The GFOA is an association serving more than 20,000 government finance professionals across North America. The award recognizes York Region’s commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting and publishing high-quality budget documents that satisfy national guidelines.
The Region’s 2025 Budget also received Special Recognition for Strategic Goals and Strategies. This special recognition is awarded when all three independent reviewers rate the budget document as “outstanding” in a specific area.
“The annual budget is just one aspect of York Region’s commitment to fostering economically sustainable communities,” said King Township Mayor Steve Pellegrini, Chair of Finance and Administration. “To receive this recognition for 21 consecutive years is a testament to the prudent planning, dedication and professionalism of York Region’s leadership and staff.”
Earlier this year, York Region was awarded the Triple Crown medallion by the GFOA in recognition of receiving all three GFOA awards for the 2023 fiscal year. These three awards include the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting, Distinguished Budget Presentation Award and Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award.
