National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia
York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York join residents across the country in recognizing National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia.
On January 29, 2017, six people lost their lives and 19 others were seriously injured during a terrorist attack at the Centre culturel islamique de Québec in Sainte-Foy.
Today, on the sixth anniversary of this tragedy, we pay tribute to the victims of this hateful act of terror and stand in solidarity with the survivors and all those who lost a loved one at the hands of bigotry, Islamophobia and racism. We also use this day as an opportunity to recognize, call out and oppose racism, faith-based discrimination, Islamophobia and other forms of hatred.
As one of the fastest growing and most diverse communities in Canada, York Region remains
committed to building welcoming and inclusive communities that recognize and celebrate all dimensions of diversity. Our diversity is a source of economic vitality. It contributes the rich, cultural fabric of our communities and serves as a reminder we all have an obligation to combat discrimination and build a more inclusive York Region.
On behalf of Regional Council and more than 1.2 million people who call our communities home, I extend condolences to all who have been impacted by this senseless act of terror and reaffirm our commitment to standing up to all forms of hate and discrimination.
