York Region extends condolences on passing of Ed Broadbent
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, I share deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of former Member of Parliament and leader of the New Democratic Party, Ed Broadbent.
A life-long champion of justice and equality in Canada and throughout the world, Mr. Broadbent served the riding of Oshawa-Whitby for more than two decades, first as MP in 1968 then as leader of the New Democratic Party from 1975 to 1989. He returned to parliament for one term in 2004, representing the riding of Ottawa Centre.
Outside of a storied career in Canadian politics, Mr. Broadbent continued his advocacy for equality and justice through work with the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development and established the Broadbent Institute to study issues of social democracy.
Mr. Broadbent lived a life of public service and was a fierce advocate for all Canadians, particularly those on the margins of society. His legacy will be one of a person who committed his life’s work to democracy, equality and a more inclusive society for all Canadians.
Our thoughts are with the Broadbent family, Canada’s New Democratic Party and the countless friends, colleagues and Canadians whose lives he touched.
