York Region mourns the passing of the Hon. David Onley, former lieutenant-governor of Ontario
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, it is with sadness we learn of the passing of Ontario’s 28th lieutenant governor, the Honourable David Onley, on January 14, 2023.
Serving Ontario from 2007 to 2014, Mr. Onley was a champion for accessibility during his time in office, working tirelessly to break down barriers to accessibility, improve access to employment for people with disabilities and create opportunities for all Ontarians. He was an advocate for reconciliation, dedicating much of his mandate to expanding opportunities to Ontario’s Indigenous Peoples.
As the first person with a physical disability to hold the post of lieutenant-governor and one of Canada’s first on-camera journalists with a visible disability, Mr. Onley encouraged people across the country to look for ability rather than see disability. While his work to transform society to improve accessibility for everyone will remain his legacy, Mr. Onley is also remembered as a dedicated and gracious public servant who was unwavering in his commitment to the people of Ontario.
On behalf of Regional Council and more than 1.2 million people who call York Region home, I offer my deepest condolences to his wife Ruth Ann and the entire Onley family. I also offer our deepest appreciation for the incredible impact David made across our communities.
In honour of David Onley, flags at York Region facilities will remain lowered to half-mast.
