York Region recognizes National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
On this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada, York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York honours those who have lost their lives to gender-based violence. We also recommit ourselves to taking action to ensure women and girls can live lives free from violence.
Today, we join Canadians across the country in paying tribute to the 14 young women who were senselessly murdered and the 13 others who were injured on December 6, 1989, at École Polytechnique de Montréal.
As we remember the victims of this hateful act, we are also reminded that, for countless women, girls and gender diverse people around the world, violence is a daily reality. This threat is unacceptable and must be addressed. That is why, on this day, we reaffirm our commitment to speak up and take action against any form of violence against women, including during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.
We each have a responsibility to work together to end gender-based violence and build a brighter, safer future for women, girls and gender diverse people in our communities, our country and around the world.
On behalf of Regional Council, I encourage the more than 1.2 million people across York Region to use this day as an opportunity to remember and reflect on the lives lost at École Polytechnique de Montréal and to learn more about how we can all address gender-based violence.
