York Region stands in solidarity with the people of Iran
Today, in cities across the country, hundreds of thousands of Canadians are participating in peaceful rallies and human chain protests in support of the women of Iran and those working to formally denounce the current Iranian regime.
As part of a worldwide call to end all forms of persecution and violence in Iran, these rallies serve as a demonstration of solidarity with Iranian protesters following the death of Mahsa Amini, who died while in the custody of Iran’s morality police, and the many others who have lost their lives in the protest movement since mid-September.
The right to peaceful protests in entrenched in our Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and The Regional Municipality of York stands with protesters across the globe, and those on the ground in Iran, who are calling for an end to this violence.
York Region remains one of the most diverse communities in Canada. Guided by the Inclusion Charter for York Region, we are committed to welcoming and inclusive communities where diversity is celebrated and where everyone can develop to their full potential, participate freely in society and live with respect, dignity and freedom from discrimination.
On behalf of York Regional Council, I extend my support and gratitude for all who are peacefully standing up for the rights of others. These events underscore the importance of the Inclusion Charter and remind us of the role we play in creating welcoming, diverse and inclusive communities.
