Reminding residents to slow down heading into Victoria Day long weekend
Newmarket – The month of May is Motorcycle Safety Month, and May 16 to May 22, 2023, is Canada Road Safety Week. Members of the media are invited to join The Regional Municipality of York and York Regional Police at an event reminding drivers, pedestrians, motorcyclists and cyclists about the importance of road safety.
Driver behaviour is the leading cause of motor vehicle collisions, contributing to 95% of all motor vehicle collisions. York Region and York Regional Police will be educating travellers about recently reduced speed limits and changing driver behaviour to increase safety.

What:
York Regional Police will be conducting speed enforcement and joining York Region staff to remind drivers, pedestrians, motorcyclists and cyclists about the importance of traveller safety for all road users.
Highlights from the Annual Traffic Safety Report:
- Driver behaviour is the leading cause of motor vehicle collisions
- Most frequently recorded improper driving action continues to be following too close to another vehicle
- Pedestrians, motorcyclists and cyclists are the most vulnerable travellers on the Regional transportation system
- Almost all pedestrian (93%), motorcycle (71%) and cycling (87%) collisions with vehicles resulted in injury or death
- Safety initiatives continue to be implemented to help increase road user awareness and safety for all travellers; this includes:
- Red-light camera program
- Automated speed enforcement
- School zone speed reductions (2022)
- Expansion of community safety zones
- Pedestrian and cycling intersection pilot
