Renewing our commitment to help seniors
Newmarket – York Region’s seniors’ population is growing faster than any other age group. By 2051, close to one in four York Region residents will be over the age of 65. To best support communities where residents of all ages and stages can thrive, York Region is updating its Seniors Strategy.
“Since launching York Region’s first Seniors Strategy in 2016, many initiatives and accomplishments have been implemented,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “York Regional Council is committed to supporting the health and well-being of our aging population. We are working closely with our partners and exploring innovative ways to keep seniors safe and supported as they age."
The proposed 2023 to 2027 York Region Plan to Support Seniors will build on successes of the previous strategy and introduce new actions and areas for needed advocacy. The goal is to enhance the health and well-being of our aging population and ensure they can age comfortably, suiting their individual needs and preferences.
Input from residents and other key stakeholders has been crucial in shaping this plan. At a Special Meeting of Council on Thursday, October 5, 2023, community partners and sector experts shared insights into the changing needs of the diverse seniors population in York Region.
“York Region aims to deliver the right services to meet the needs of our growing seniors’ population,” said City of Vaughan Regional Councillor Gino Rosati, Chair of Community and Health Services. “Balancing the needs of all generations while also keeping seniors healthier, the proposed plan supports the Healthy Communities priority of the York Region 2023 to 2027 Strategic Plan.”
The proposed plan focuses on where the Region can make a difference, advocate for change and bring together various stakeholders to address senior-related issues. While the Region offers important programs for seniors, most health and community services supporting seniors are delivered by other organizations and levels of government. York Region will continue to advocate and collaborate with the province and other stakeholders to drive system improvements and address gaps to make it easier for seniors to access the services they need.
The updated plan will be presented to Regional Council for consideration in early 2024. Moving forward, the plan will also be updated every four years to coincide with each new term of Council, York Region’s multi-year budget process and Strategic Plan.
