Stay up to date with your COVID-19 vaccination
Over 85% of York Region residents five and older received their first and second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine (primary COVID-19 series), and it has helped protect many of us against severe COVID-19, hospitalization and death. At the peak of the Omicron wave, unvaccinated residents were 3.4x more likely to be hospitalized due to COVID-19 than vaccinated residents.
While first and second doses are important, staying up to date with your booster doses is just as important. Emerging evidence suggests vaccination protection can fade over time and additional doses helps ‘boost’ our immune system and extend the protection, especially in those who are at most risk for severe outcomes of the virus.
No matter how healthy you are, you could get very sick or even die without vaccines to protect you. Staying up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations also helps protect everyone else around you including some of our most vulnerable members of the community such as, very young children and people who are sick or aging.
Up to date means a person has received all recommended COVID-19 vaccine doses, including any booster dose(s) when eligible.
Age | Recommendation |
---|---|
5 to 11 | Primary COVID-19 series |
12 to 59 | Primary COVID-19 series and booster dose |
60+ | Primary COVID-19 series, two booster doses |
What is considered up to date for COVID-19 will likely change over time based on availability of new vaccines, how much COVID-19 is circulating and as new evidence on additional booster doses becomes available.
Fourth doses (second booster doses) are available for people 60+
Current data tells us there is a correlation between age and severity from COVID-19 infections. It’s important to get your fourth dose of the vaccine if you are over 60 years of age and it has been at least three months from your last dose.
York Region expanded fourth dose eligibility to individuals 60 years and older as well as First Nation, Inuit and Métis individuals and their non-Indigenous household members aged 18 and older. Fourth doses for eligible individuals are available by appointment only.
