York Regional Forest Walks and Events


Winter Take a Walk Header

Spending time in nature can relieve stress and improve your memory performance and attention span. Join us on a free guided walk to experience the beauty of the York Regional Forest.

Registration Information

Registration opens one month before each event. Register online or call 1-877-464-9675. Click on each event to view the full details.  Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. 

Events are designed for people who have never been to the York Regional Forest. If you have attended a monthly walk before, please spread the word about these exciting events and join us at a festival or special event.

How to Prepare for Your Visit

Please wear appropriate clothing to suit the season. Dressing in layers is recommended. Events are held snow, rain or shine.

Wearing insect repellent, closed-toed footwear, light coloured long-sleeved shirts and long pants, tucked into your socks is recommended. Poison ivy is common in all forests.


Tree ID Workshop for Beginners

Tuesday, September 24 | 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Celebrate National Forest Week by learning how to identify Ontario trees and shrubs.  Spend time practicing and testing your plant identification skills during this hands-on session.  Registration required. For ages twelve and up.


Introduction to Bats

Friday, August 23 (ages 16 and up) | 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Saturday, August 24 (ages six and up) | 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Learn about Ontario bats while enjoying a guided walk over rolling hills. Look for acrobatic flying bats swooping through the air. Registration required.

National Forest Week Festival

Saturday, September 21 | 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Kick off National Forest Week by spending time in the forest. Enjoy a variety of events including wagon rides, face painting, guided walks and much more. Take home a tree seedling and pollinator friendly plant. Open to all. Registration required for guided walks.

Forest Folklore

Saturday, October 26 | 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Dress up in your best Halloween costume and explore the forest while listening to magical stories and folklore. Registration required.

It’s for the Birds!

Saturday, November 2 | 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Bring your grandchildren and discover different birds that visit or live in the York Regional Forest. Build a bird box or bird feeder to take home (bird box kits supplied). Registration required.

Holiday Open House

Saturday, December 14 | 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and learn about the traditions of bells and Christmas trees. Make a holiday decoration to take home. Enjoy a self-guided walk. Bring a non-perishable food donation for a local food bank. Registration required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring my dog to a forest walk or event?

You can bring your dog to an event, however we ask that the dog is leashed at all times. The event leader may ask at any time for the dog to be removed from the event if he or she is misbehaving or is making other participants uncomfortable.

Will a forest walk or event be cancelled due to rain?

Take a Walk in the Forest Events run rain or shine. Events have been and can be cancelled in the case of adverse weather conditions, such as very strong winds, severe thunderstorms or icy trails.

Will I be contacted if a forest walk or event is cancelled?

Yes. The event leader will make his or her best efforts to contact everybody on the registration list (using the contact information provided upon registration) in the event of a cancellation.

Will a forest walk or event be rescheduled if it is cancelled?

Rescheduling events is considered on a case by case basis and is communicated to participants directly.

Are York Regional Forest Trails wheelchair accessible?

York Region maintains three trails accessible to wheelchairs and other assistive devices in the Hollidge Tract, North Tract and Hall Tract.
