Notice of Open House - Upper York Sewage Solutions

June 2013, Preferred Water Reclamation Centre Site and Preferred Water Conveyance Route, Towns of Aurora, East Gwillimbury and Newmarket

The Regional Municipality of York (York Region) is undertaking the Upper York Sewage Solutions (UYSS) Environmental Assessment (EA), in accordance with the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act, to determine wastewater servicing for the Towns of Aurora, East Gwillimbury and Newmarket to meet provincially-approved growth to 2031.

As a result of extensive consultation, York Region has identified a preferred site for the proposed Water Reclamation Centre on 2nd Concession, one-kilometre north of Queensville Sideroad in East Gwillimbury, along with trunk sewer pipes to transport sewage to the Water Reclamation Centre for treatment and a pipe to carry treated water to the proposed outfall location. This is to accommodate wastewater from provincially-approved growth in East Gwillimbury and a portion of Newmarket. The proposed Water Reclamation Centre will employ environmentally-sustainable wastewater purification and water recycling technologies.

Wastewater from provincially-approved growth to 2031 in Aurora and the remainder of approved growth in Newmarket would be conveyed to the existing York Durham Sewage System (YDSS) for treatment and discharge to Lake Ontario. This growth would require an additional wastewater forcemain. York Region has identified a preferred route for this additional forcemain, adjacent to the existing YDSS forcemain alignment.

The preliminary design has been developed for this preferred solution to identify potential environmental effects; avoidance, mitigation and other measures; appropriate monitoring requirements; and approvals and permitting requirements.
