Tribute

1. Town of Georgina Regional Councillor Danny Wheeler

The Committee paid tribute to the memory and legacy of the Town of Georgina’s Regional Councillor Danny Wheeler, who passed away on November 1, 2016.

Regional Councillor Wheeler served on York Regional Council for 28 years from 1988 to 2016 and was the longest consecutive-serving member in York Region Council’s 45 year history. He started his political career as a Georgina Ward Councillor in 1982 and sat on Georgina Council for 34 years.

He was a founding member of the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee and served every term since 2003 when accessibility planning began under the Ontarians with Disabilities Act.  He was an informed, committed and tireless advocate for accessibility and was instrumental in the progress the Region has made in making the York Region community more accessible.

The York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee supports York Region’s plan to name a future accessible trail in the York Regional Forest in the Town of Georgina in honour of former Regional Councillor Danny Wheeler.
