The Committee of the Whole meeting was called to order at 9 a.m. on September 6, 2018 with Regional Chair Emmerson in the chair.

Opening Remarks from Regional Chairman

 

1. Regional Chair Emmerson made the following remarks:

 

“I would like to begin today’s meeting by acknowledging that York Region extends over lands originally used and occupied by Indigenous Peoples, and on behalf of York Region, I would like to thank First Nations and the Métis for sharing this land.

I would also like to acknowledge the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation as our closest First Nation community.”

2. Receipt and referral to staff of the communication from Kimberley Kitteringham, City Clerk, City of Markham dated June 1, 2018 regarding “Municipal Road Transfer - Elgin Mills Road Transfer and Donald Cousens Parkway Extension Transportation Planning Study”.

3. York University - Transit Service Changes

 

Committee of the Whole recommends:

1. Receipt of the memorandum from Paul Jankowski, Commissioner of Transportation Services dated September 4, 2018.

2. Staff continue to work on this matter to reach a satisfactory solution.

3. Staff provide a status report at the September 20, 2018 Council meeting.

4. Council ask Metrolinx to redouble its efforts towards fare integration.

Other Business

 

35. Passing of Former Regional Councillor and City of Markham Deputy Mayor Ronald Dancey

 

The Committee honoured the life and impact of Ronald Dancey, former Regional Councillor and City of Markham Deputy Mayor who passed away on August 31, 2018.

Regional Chair Emmerson praised Mr. Dancey’s hard work ethic and dedication to serving the York Region community. Following a term as a Markham Ward Councillor, he served two terms on York Regional Council over five years between 1980 and 1985. As a member of Council, he served on both the Planning Committee and the York Central Hospital Board.

On behalf of Council, Regional Chair Emmerson offered sincere condolences and sympathies to Mr. Dancey’s family, friends and colleagues.

Members of Council and all those present in the Council Chamber stood in a moment of silence in honour of Mr. Dancey.
