York Region celebrates the Year of the Dragon
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, it is my pleasure to extend warmest wishes to everyone celebrating Lunar New Year.
Lunar New Year is one of the most important and celebrated holidays for East and Southeast Asian cultures, including Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean communities, among others. It is a time to reflect on the past year, look forward to the year ahead with hope and optimism and honours household and heavenly deities and ancestors.
As one of the most diverse and fastest growing Canadian municipalities, 55% of York Region residents identify themselves as a visible minority, with Chinese being the largest visible minority group. This rich diversity of culture and experience contribute to a better York Region.
In celebrating Lunar New Year, we recognize the tremendous contributions our Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and other Asian residents have made to the heritage of York Region and thank them for their cultural, social and economic influence on every aspect of our communities.
On behalf of Regional Council and more than 1.2 million people who call York Region home, it is my pleasures to wish all those celebrating the very best in health, prosperity, happiness and peace during the Year of the Dragon.
Happy New Year!
