Georgina Water Treatment Plant - NOTICE OF IN-WATER FIELD STUDIES
York Region is conducting further in-water field studies in Lake Simcoe as part of the Georgina Water Treatment Plant (GWTP) Mussel Control, Intake-Outfall Pipe rehabilitation project. The in-water field studies will look at the lake bed and wave conditions in the area. Field studies are part of the rehabilitation process and will help minimize impact to the surrounding environment and public.
The rehabilitation work includes improvements to the GWTP, repairs to the outfall and intake pipes and upgrades to the mussel control system in Lake Simcoe.
York Region has consulted federal and provincial regulatory agencies and obtained all necessary permits prior to the in-water field studies beginning.
When: From late August to late October 2023
What you can expect:
- The geotechnical investigations are in Lake Simcoe and happen from the Emily B barge located approximately 1.5 kilometres from Willow Wharf Park shore
- Work on the barge in Lake Simcoe will happen during the day; the barge will be moved to the investigation site daily and docked at Jackson’s Point Harbour
- In-water work and drilling methods used will cause minimal disturbance to the lakebed will not affect the ecology of the lake and will be in an environmentally sensitive manner
- There will be minor noise due to the operation of the equipment on the barge, though every effort will be made to reduce the noise
- Willow Wharf Park will remain open
- This work will not affect water or wastewater services in your area
