Kleinburg Water Resource Recovery Facility – Algae Wastewater Treatment Pilot Study
The Regional Municipality of York is conducting a pilot study for algae-based treatment technologies to remove phosphorus and nitrogen in wastewater at the Kleinburg Water Resource Recovery Facility. This facility is located at 10299 Highway 27 in the City of Vaughan and is one of York Region’s stand-alone wastewater treatment facilities.
Duration: Ongoing to spring 2024
About the study
The study examines emerging and innovative sustainable algae-based wastewater treatments in cold Canadian climates. Small samples of wastewater will be taken and algae-based treatment technologies will be used to remove nutrients, such as phosphorus and nitrogen.
Wastewater treated in the study will then go through the full Kleinburg WRRF treatment process before being discharged to ensure it continues to meet all provincial requirements. The study is a separate operation and will not impact the operation at the facility in any way.
This is a feasibility study; there is no implementation plan for this technology at this time. This project aligns with One Water goals as outlined in York Region’s 2022 Water and Wastewater Master Plan.
